March Day Walk: Whitwell
A fairly easy day starting at Whitwell and walking via Preston and St Pauls Walden back to the village. Typical Hertfordshire countryside: beech wood, fields and gentle inclines, with occasional long vistas
and open sky. The walk circles the Queen Mother's childhood home and passes(!) five pubs, so maybe more of a pub crawl than a Royal Progress!
Plenty of plane spotting for the enthusiasts amongst you.

Rockingham Forest and the Nene Valley
Can Northamptonshire be the most underrated county in the UK? Our recce revealed lush river valleys and lakes, classic rolling countryside, picturesque stone villages and unspoiled towns, as well as imposing stately homes – and not many people! Our base will be the Benefield Wheatsheaf in Upper Benefield where we will have two nights B&B in lovely big rooms with tea and coffee making facilities, en suite bathrooms and wide screen TVs. Saturday night dinner will hopefully be in a private dining room (depends on our final numbers), with a choice at each course and wine etc on the table.
Walking will aim to explore some of the contrasting landscapes of the area. Rockingham Royal Forest, remains of an ancient hunting ground, is a patchwork of woodland and agriculture, with many routes for walking, while the Nene Valley features lush waterways like the one pictured at Barnwell Country Park.
Cost in a twin or double room will be approx £140. Limited single occupancy is available and this will cost £170. Please book now by sending a cheque for £100 to Dee.

Llangollen
We shall be based at the popular independent hostel in Llangollen, in six-bed dorms, to enjoy exploring the local countryside and and the Llangollen canal.
On Saturday we plan a 8.5 mile walk from Llangollen via Castell Dinas Bran, Valle Crucis Abbey and Horseshoe Falls. We finish early enough to take a two-hour boat trip over Pontcysyllte
aqueduct – a World Heritage Site – including a three-course dinner on board. Sunday involves an 11-mile walk in the Ruabon mountains and along limestone edges near Llangollen. On Monday we’ll have a short six-mile walk, to allow early departure, exploring the waterside along the River Dee and
the Shropshire Union Canal visiting Pontcysyllte aqueduct on route.
Cost for the weekend, including three nights B&B, self-catering breakfasts, packed lunches and two dinners, and the Saturday boat ride and dinner, around £120. We have limited spaces and have to book this month, so if you are interested you need to contact the leaders right away and confirm your space by sending a deposit cheque for £50.
