First Aid Course
Fourteen keen participants arrived bright and early for the first aid course.
Our trainers, first aiders Adrian and Glenys, plus paramedic Kieran introduced us to the principles of first aiding and then took us in more detail through the assessment and management of an emergency incident.
We learnt how to put a person into the recovery position and how to perform chest compressions in order to resuscitate a casualty if they stopped breathing. We were hands on and learned as much from our mistakes as from instruction whilst practicing.
We had a session on risk assessment and planning, learning how vital it is for all participants on walks to be fit enough and properly equipped in order to limit the need for practicing first aid. We were also taught how to recognise and deal with dehydration and hypothermia.

After a hearty lunch of soup and a ploughmans we resumed and again used each other as guinea pigs when learning how to bandage and splint various injuries.
The final session was how to recognise and deal with heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and epileptic seizures.
Although there was much laughter and joking, we worked hard and came away with a better understanding of how to deal with emergencies and, hopefully, all feel more confident about facing an emergency situation. Pat
