What are your members like?
We have 90 members with an age range of about 30 to over 70. Newcomers call us friendly and welcoming. Some of us are retired and others in a range of jobs. You can always find someone with similar interests to talk to on a walk.
How far do you walk?
A Sunday day walk can be between 10 and 12 miles, even up to 14 on some walks. The midweek walks are about 7 miles and evening walks around 5 miles. You will always be told how far and the sort of ground the walk is over. On weekends away the walks may be longer and more challenging especially in mountainous areas like Wales or the Lake District. All our walks are taken at a steady pace and are suitable for anyone of normal fitness. Some of the walks are in a figure of eight and some a large circle. You will be told if lunch is needed or if a pub is available en route.
Our walk grading system will help you understand the type of walk and the equipment you need for it.
Who runs the group?
Members set policy at the Annual General Meeting held in March. There is a main committee and an events committee. Members are always welcome to make suggestions about walks, weekends or anything else.
Does that mean I will have to organise things?
Not unless you want to! We encourage members to share ideas for events and to lead walks. We run a map reading and leaders course and have produced a guide to organising walks. Whist we always welcome new leaders and encourage members to "have a go" at organising a walk, we want you to enjoy yourselves and join in for the day.
Can I walk with you and see if I like it?
Yes you can. We change an insurance fee of £1.00 to join any of the day or evening walks. For insurance purposes you must be a member to take part in a weekend event.
How do I join and what does it cost?
Send us your name and address for further details of membership. The costs are currently (2010) £14 for a single member or £22 for two people at the same address. This entitles you to attend any of our events, to receive six newsletters a year and to benefit from discounts at local outdoor gear suppliers.
